The Research in Medicine Symposium is an inaugural event by the NSW Medical Students' Council. It is one of a kind, designed to benefit both inexperienced and experienced students alike – giving you as a medical students the confidence to undertake, present, publish and pursue research right through your careers, starting now!
On the day, the famous Professor Talley (yes, THE Talley from Talley and O'Connor) will give a keynote address as the editor-in-chief of the Medical Journal of Australia, dispelling common misconceptions about research in medicine.
Afterwards, there will be a panel of clinician-researchers that will be discussing and engaging with the audience on how their involvement in research has enriched their clinical practice. As well as exciting break out sessions where we have got you covered from a beginner level through to advanced!
Also on the day, students who have submitted the best abstracts will be given the opportunity to present their work with feedback by a panel of expert judges. The best works will be given a feature in the Medical Journal of Australia and may be considered for publication!
The NSW Medical Students’ Council believes that the importance of research in clinical practice cannot be overstated, with evidence-based medicine informing every decision a healthcare worker makes. Research is medicine’s only way forward, and with the movement of Australian medical schools and specialist colleges towards research-focused programs, we are committed to ensure that you are the most prepared for your medical degree.

Successful applicants will be given the chance to present their work to an esteemed panel of judges including Professor Nick Talley, Editor-in-Chief of the Medical Journal of Australia (MJA).
The winners of the clinical and basic science streams will be profiled in the MJA, and will be given the opportunity to submit their work for publication to the MJA should they choose to!

- Students must have been studying medicine in NSW or ACT when they undertook their research.
- Must be research commenced during medical degree (excludes research partaken in prior degrees).
- RESEARCH DOES NOT HAVE TO BE COMPLETE.
- Abstract should be no more than 400 words.
