The NSWMSC Leadership in Medicine Symposium (LIMS) is the premier academic & upskilling event for NSW medical students. The 2016 theme is "Medicine Outside the Hospital" –​ showcasing the exciting things you can do with your degree!

Workshops

LIMS2016 will bring together leaders from various specialties to inspire & provide you with an exclusive insight into leadership and training pathways in medicine. Our afternoon breakout sessions will then give you a unique opportunity to practise becoming a more effective, engaging and enlightening student leader.

Dr Saxon Smith (AMA NSW President)
  • Current president of the Australian Medical Association of NSW
  • Spokesperson and advocate for many public health campaigns, and sits on the advisory board of groups in the not-for-profit sector
  • Graduated in 2000, and also has a Masters in Health Law
  • Currently in private practice in Gosford, is a VMO at Royal North Shore and a clinical senior lecture at the University of Sydney

Dr Mary Langcake (Trauma and Upper GIT Surgeon, Royal Australian Air Force)
  • Dr Langcake has frontline medical military experience, having been deployed to Afghanistan in 2008
  • Director of Trauma at St George Hospital, Sydney
  • Chair of the RACS Women in Surgery Committee (2006-2008)

Dr Barri Phatarfod (Co-founder, Doctors for Refugees)
  • Co-founder and Convenor of Doctors for Refugees
  • Currently working as a GP in Rose Bay
  • Past experience on the AMA NSW, AMA and Australian Federation of Medical Women
  • Previous experience as a medical officer at the After Hours Sexual Assault Clinic

Dr Michael Bonning (Lieutenant, Royal Australian Navy)
  • GP Registrar, past director at beyondblue
  • 2008 AMSA President, ex-chair of AMA Council of Doctors-in-Training
  • Servical medical officer in the Royal Australian Navy, currently working as the senior medical officer for their largest naval base at Garden Island in Sydney as well as in private practice​
  • Strong advocate for Indigenous health issues and social equality, working at the Tharawal Aboriginal Medical Service ​

Dr Peter Lavelle (Journalist, Broadcaster, Editor)
  • Graduated in 1983 and practised as a GP for several years before leaving clinical medicine to become a journalist, broadcaster and editor
  • Written for SMH, AFR, The Age, Medical Observer, Australian Doctor and more
  • Editor, writer and publicist for a wide range of pharmaceutical companies, patient support groups and health NGOs
  • Previous editor of the Medical Journal of Australia

Dr Ben Veness (Doctor, Writer, Churchill Fellow)
  • Started career in the banking sector before moving over to medicine
  • 2013 AMSA President, and twice elected to the Senate of the University of Sydney
  • 2013 recipient of the Churchill Fellowship to research university students’ mental health; 2016 Australia Day Ambassador
  • Writes for the SMH and a report written by him was recently the subject of a feature piece on students’ mental health

Dr Jackie Huber (Advanced Psychiatry Trainee, Doctor at St Vincent's Hospital)
  • Passionate about advocacy and is currently the registrar representative for the RANZCP Subcommittee for Advanced Training in Old Age Psychiatry (POA).
  • Previously vice president and POA representative for the NSW Association for Psychiatry Trainees.
  • Project manager for Psychogeriatric SOS, an e-medicine rural outreach initiative that supports rural clinicians.

Dr Ajit Sivasankaran (Doctor at John Hunter Hospital and Manning base hospital)
  • Holds fellowships in Anaesthesia, intensive care, retrieval and pre-hospital medicine.
  • Involved with British Territorial Army and the UK disaster relief team; part of a team which developed and introduced the field hospital into the UK disaster relief management process.
  • Provided medical support/Leadership to various natural disasters around the world including Haiti and Philippines

Dr Gabrielle McMullin (Surgeon, Senior Lecturer at UNSW)
  • Vascular surgeon; born in Uganda, then moved to Hong Kong, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK and Australia. Works at St. George and Sutherland Hospitals
  • Author of the book "Pathways to Gender Equality: The Role of Merit and Quotas"
  • After the book launch in March 2015 she was interviewed by ABC radio and the interview caused international outrage. Subsequent furore led to the establishment of an External Advisory Group by the RACS and their findings were damning on the extent of bullying, discrimination and harassment within surgery.
